China
Hunan. Kuang-hsü silver Specimen Pattern 50 Cents ND (1898) SP55 NGC, Heaton mint, KM-Pn2, L&M-379, Kann-Unl., WS-0890, Wenchao-788 (rarity 5 stars). Wholly impressive and quite elusive, with Krause reporting the existence of only 6 examples of the Dollar and 50 Cent denominations produced as trials by the Heaton mint, and further confirmed by extensive research on the topic produced upon the most recent sale of the Goodman example in 2020. While the existence of these larger denominations was wholly unknown to Kann, they would be revealed by Richard Wright in 1974 after their location in the reference collection of the Heaton mint, which included master dies and a sales order, each having never made their way to China due to the temporary closing of the Changsha mint. Blessed with a quality one expects from a Heaton product of this era, displaying only the clearest and most well-expressed detail atop an amber-tinged, reflective canvas. With this in mind, the presence of the current representative is simply astounding, coming to market nearly once a decade. Regardless of the grade-defining wisps and minor handling, these ultimately do nothing to impede the 1898 Hunan 50 Cents' numismatic importance and is expected to be among the session's most highly pursued lots.
