Kiangnan. Kuang-hsü Dollar ND (1897) XF Details (Chop Mark) PCGS, Nanking mint, KM-Y145, L&M-210B, Kann-66. Reeded edge. A good-looking piece that demands attention, the fierce dragon staring boldly at the viewer and the scales of its body wholly realistically portrayed. A single chop on the dragon's forehead blends in almost unnoticeably, whereas the chops on the reverse are more numerous. Evenly patinated in pleasing elephant gray, this piece appears perhaps a little better than the assigned grade would suggest when viewed in hand.
The iconic first modern silver Dollar issued by the mint at Nanking. Though both Wenchao and Wang Chun Lin assign a somewhat similar rarity and value to both the Herringbone and Reeded edge varieties of this type, Lin and Ma assign the latter a far greater value, with its rarity supported by a quick survey of the certified population there appears to be roughly 10 times more of the Herringbone edge subtype presently graded across both grading services compared to Reeded edge specimens.
