Kiangnan. Kuang-hsü Dollar ND (1897) XF Details (Repaired) PCGS, Nanking mint, KM-Y145, L&M-210B, Kann-66, Chang-CH64, WS-0788, Wenchao-639 (rarity 2 stars). Reeded edge. Variety with single stroke in sheng ("province"). The earliest modern silver Dollar issued by the Nanking mint and an issue that is difficult to procure across all states of preservation. Though both Wenchao and Wang Chun Lin assign a somewhat similar rarity and value to both the Herringbone and Reeded edge varieties of this type, Lin and Ma assign the latter a far greater value, with its comparative scarcity supported by a quick survey of the certified population. This is only the second example we have offered of this variety, a highly original survivor that bears the remnants of an ink chop on both facets, the reverse significantly more pronounced, but both their removals qualifying for the details designation. Strong remaining definition throughout the centers, particularly the dragon motif, furthers the appeal of this specimen, an easy consideration for those wishing to add the type to their collection at a reasonable price.
