Kwangtung. Kuang-hsü 10 Cents ND (1889) XF Details (Environmental Damage) PCGS, Kwangtung mint, KM-Y195.1, L&M-131, WS-0939. Denomination written as 7.2 CANDAREENS. An extreme rarity with only a small handful of pieces extant. Showing minor highpoint wear but retaining great depth to the peripheries, this piece shows a dark, speckled patination often seen in examples which were kept for several decades in a coin tray. Further inspection reveals somewhat muted surfaces with nuances of a remaining peripheral luster, the grade qualifier referring to the discoloration seen at 3 o'clock in the obverse near the right character.
Produced from Birmingham hubs at the Kwangtung mint at the realization that the province's first circulating issues were being hoarded and melted for their metal content. Slight modifications were made to the new issue, including small rosettes and an adjustment to the denomination, from 7 3/10 Candareens to 7.2. Unfortunately, this series never made it into circulation due to its failure to gain the approval of Peking authorities, potentially from the prominent placement of English characters.
