Kweichow. Republic "Auto" Dollar Year 17 (1928) MS62 NGC, KM-Y428, L&M-609, Kann-757e, WS-1109. Two blades of grass, ventilator lines curved at top variety. A type with intangible value to collectors of Asian numismatics, represented by a specimen that is transcendent in every sense of the word.
Commissioned by governor Chow Hsi-chen to commemorate the completion of the first provincial highway in Kweichow, this issue departed from tradition by featuring the governor's motor car as the centerpiece of its design, a declaration not only of the import of Chinese modernization efforts, but of their successful execution. This latter commentary is convincingly illustrated on the motifs through the juxtaposition of the clear path on which the automobile drives with the untamed, grassy land that it borders, signifying mechanization's ever-futile attempt to usurp Mother Nature.
The condition conveyed by this particular representative is almost unbelievable considering the majority of the certified population falls below the standards for AU-levels of preservation. And yet, here we offer a near-Choice specimen boasting the highest grade awarded by certification companies for this variety, and second finest for the type. Underlying bloom ignites the pervading olive-gold and stone-gray patina, both a mature and effervescent display. The strike rendered some inconsistent depth across the devices but the detail remains almost entirely intact, with near-Choice clarity most visible throughout the peripheries.
Only one other example has reached this extremely covetable state of preservation, a specimen sold by Stack's in 2011 to a tune of $110,000. With our 2019 offering of an MS61 example surpassing that hammer amount by $40,000, it seems the threshold to contend in the bidding for this belle has become harder to penetrate. All sights will be set on this numismatic improbability when it crosses the block, a true paragon of the "Auto" type.
