Republic Yuan Shih-kai silver Mule "Mint Sports" 10 Cents ND (1926) MS63 PCGS, cf. KM-Y326 (obverse), cf. KM-Y334 (reverse), L&M-922, Kann Mint Sports-K (cf. Plate 224, different obverse). A peculiar issue falling under the immensely popular mint sports category, products of poorly disciplined mint workers acting under unsupervised circumstances. A mule of 10 Cents dies featuring L. Giorgi's Yuan Shih-kai portrait and the instantly recognizable Phoenix and Dragon design, this particular type has seen hardly any appearances on the market. The offering at hand is the only example certified and only two others locatable by this cataloger, a specimen sold with the Goodman Collection (Lot 823) and the other sold by Baldwin's in 2010, both exhibiting XF-AU states of preservation. The present selection is, by all indications, certainly one of the finest examples extant. Boasting an impossible Choice appearance, the devices remain fully struck-up and sharp while the flan retains its original argent hue and exhibits hardly any chatter in the fields even with the aid of magnification. Surely a tempting item for the collector of Chinese fantasies and mint sports and an absolute delight to behold in hand.
