Republic Yuan Shih-kai silver Specimen Pattern "L. Giorgi" Dollar Year 3 (1914) SP63 NGC, Tientsin mint, KM-Pn31, L&M-67, Kann-645, WS-0169, Wenchao-860 (rarity 3 stars). "L. Giorgi" signature variety. A veritable highlight for any collector of Chinese rarities and one that consistently ranks among the toughest to acquire across the Pattern series in its entirety. One of several proposed designs for a reimagined coinage for the young Republic that would ultimately propel the Tientsin mint's chief engraver, Luigi Giorgi, to the forefront of numismatic design. This Pattern would ultimately be accepted for production, although without the engraver's signature, and quickly become one of the most prolific effigies of the 20th century. While we've witnessed two other Pattern Dollar types featuring the portrait of the storied Yuan Shih-kai, his "Plumed Hat" and 3/4 bust, with greater frequency, those boasting his profile bust are much scarcer, appearing at auction only ten times in the last two decades; the most recent was the NC Collection specimen, an SP65, crossing the block in May of 2021. Resplendent flash abounds this decidedly Choice outlier, whose battleship-gray appearances and gentle cabinet tone add considerable visual allure. With even the slightest tilt of the wrist, a pleasing champagne aura presents itself, further projecting the now iconic motifs towards the viewer. Of the certified representatives, which currently number at 21, only four outrank the present specimen, topping out at SP65, and with examples available to collectors once every few years, we expect a bidder response consistent with current trends for the rarest of Chinese coins.
