A COLLECTION FORMED BY PAUL STEVENS, SULTANATES Muhammad b. Tughluq, Gold Tanka, Dehli, AH 741, struck in the name of the Abbasid Caliph al-Mustakfi, 11.01g (G&G D427). Very fine, rare.
Keen for his authority to be legitimised by the ruling Abbasid Caliphs, Muhammad b. Tughluq struck coins in their name. Nevertheless news of a caliph's death did not always travel quickly enough and in the case of al-Mustakfi, Muhammad continued minting coins in his name for four years after his death.
