SAFFARID: Tahir b. Muhammad, 901-908, AR dirham (4.10g), "Arrajan ", AH289, A-1404, contemporary imitation, perhaps of Central Asian or Khorasanian origin, VF, R. Calligraphically, this remarkable piece is utterly different from normal Saffarid, Abbasid and other late 3rd century Hijri coins of Fars province -- Arrajan is located in the western extreme of Fars. Most likely, this is a local issue from the northeastern fringes of the territories controlled by the Saffarids and their northern neighbors, the Samanids.
