CHINA, Foreign Enclaves. Hong Kong. Victoria. Queen of Great Britain, 1842-1901. AR Dollar (38mm, 26.91 g, 6h). Hong Kong mint. Dated 1867. KM 10. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 64 WINGS APPROVED. Choice brilliant uncirculated with a faint hint of violet patina. Extremely rare. Highest graded for the date and none graded higher for the type.

Purchased from Jess Peters, April 1970.

Hong Kong lies off the Pearl River Delta in southeast China and was originally ceded to the British in the Treaty of Nanking, ending the First Opium War. The acquisition was considered frivolous by some in Parliament, who called it a "barren rock," and saw in it little economic opportunity. Yet the natural deep harbor and advantageous geographical position allowed the region and the city to thrive, with additional territories soon being added. Eventually, the whole of the British territory of Hong Kong was reorganized into a 98-year lease that concluded with the return of the area to Chinese control in 1996.
