FRANCE, Troisième République. 1870-1940. AR 2 Francs (27mm, 10.04 g, 6h). "Semeuse" type. Castelsarrasin mint; différents: cornucopia and torch. Henri-Auguste Patey, engraver general. Régie des Monnaies, directors. Dated 1914 C. VG 532; KM 845.2. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 63. Choice blast white uncirculated with just a hint of patina. One year only type.


As the German army advanced on Paris in August of 1914, the decision was made to evacuate the mint and its important personnel. The operation moved to Castelsarrasin in the southern part of the country where it remained until the threat on the capital subsided in November.
