(Regarding the 1923 Franc and the 1924 2 Franc) Rising metal costs had forced the official French mints to cease production of silver coinage in 1920. Yet the demand for the denominations was strong, and local merchants and chambers of commerce stepped in with numerous tokens. When these private issues proved unacceptable, the national chamber of commerce stepped in and issued this series of official tokens. The official nature of these tokens warrants their placement within the body of French coinage.
