Large Cents
1793 1C Chain, AMERICA, S-3, B-4, Low R.3, XF45 NGC. Four obverse dies and two reverse dies were utilized in five combinations to strike the Chain cents in March 1793. Study of die states reveals that the Chain AMERI. cents were produced first. The same obverse die was used with a new reverse die that had AMERICA spelled in full to produce the cents cataloged as Sheldon-2. That reverse die remained in use with three additional obverse dies to strike NC-1, S-3, and S-4. The S-3 marriage is the most frequently encountered of those, and is a perfect choice for collectors who seek a single Chain cent to illustrate the type.
Despite speculation over the years, we are certain that the Chief Coiner, Henry Voigt, engraved these early dies for the 1793 copper coins. That attribution is based on a primary document: Elias Boudinot's 1795 report on the Mint, where he wrote: "It was also a considerable time before an engraver could be engaged, during which, the chief coiner was obliged to make the dies for himself." Robert Scot was not appointed to the position of Mint engraver until several months later, and there is no evidence that Joseph Wright engraved these dies.
Light clash marks are noted along the neck, chin, and mouth, and below the bust on this attractive Chain cent. Despite trivial marks, the steel-brown and mahogany surfaces are smooth and free of corrosion. The date, legends, bust, and chain are all well-defined. The obverse shows central weakness on the high points of the bust that is typical of all surviving Chain cents. This Choice XF example is an impressive survivor of the last 230 years.
