1940 5C Reverse of 1938, FS-901, PR68 PCGS. The Reverse of 1938 is identified by the "mushy" steps on Monticello, contrasting with the Reverse of 1940, which has sharply defined individual steps. The Reverse of 1938 variety is by far the rarer of the two in proof format, being scarce in any grade and rare at the Superb Gem level. This PR68 coin is one of just nine pieces in this grade at PCGS and NGC combined, making it tied for finest known (6/23). Delicate lavender and butterscotch toning paints a pastel blanket across the mirrored fields and sharp, satiny devices. No imperfections are seen. Population: 4 in 68, 0 finer (2/24).
