Twenty Cent Pieces
1876 20C Doubled Die Reverse, FS-801, MS66 NGC. CAC. BF-1, R.4. Four die pairs struck the 14,750-piece 1876 twenty cent mintage. It was the final year of circulation strikes in a brief four-year series that saw coins minted for circulation only in 1875 and 1876. Proofs were struck in 1877 and 1878, when the odd denomination came to a quick and merciful end. The short series is often collected by a single coin to represent the type. This 1876 Premium Gem example displays the BF-1 die pair, easily identified by its doubled die reverse visible along the bottom serifs of STATES. The crossbar of A also shows clear doubling on this high-grade example. The BF-1 obverse shows 1 in the date closer to the dentils than any other 1876 variety. Attractive bluish-gray and pale-gold toning drifts across the prooflike obverse fields, while the reverse toning deepens to an overall blue-gray patina. A pinpoint-sharp strike exists throughout both the obverse and reverse. Census (all varieties): 19 in 66 (1 in 66+, 2 in 66), 3 finer. CAC: 8 in 66, 3 finer (1/24).
