Seated Quarters
1870-CC 25C VF20 PCGS. Briggs 1-A. The 1870-CC is one of the notable condition rarities in the Seated Liberty quarter series, and it is a key date in all grades. Coinage of this denomination at Carson City was trivial during the first five years of the mint's operation, and in 1870, only 8,340 pieces were struck. These coins were produced with silver mined from the Comstock Lode, and their purpose was to supply the Nevada Territory with circulating federal coinage. Carson City authority Rusty Goe reports that less than 70 to 85 coins survive in all grades, most of which are at VF and lower levels. Only a single piece is known in Mint State. The Condition Census of this issue is topped by a single MS64 NGC coin, followed by one AU55+, two AU55, and two AU53s, PCGS and NGC combined (2/24). This tally does not include a few AU Details examples reported by NGC.
The present Very Fine coin survived prolonged commercial use in the West during the 19th century. The surfaces are gunmetal-gray with deep amber patina around the borders. Scattered contact marks are apparent on each side, a mainstay of most known 1870-CC quarter dollars. The coin is pleasing for the grade and a highly collectible example of this rare Carson City issue. Population: 7 in 20, 30 finer (2/24).
