Seated Half Dollars
1853 50C Arrows and Rays, WB-101, MS65 PCGS. The half dollar planchet weight change from 206.25 to 192 grains was a significant change in accordance with the Mint Act of 1853, seeking to balance the silver-to-gold ratio. Outfacing arrows were added at each side of the date to signify the weight change. More than 3.5 million half dollars were struck by the Philadelphia Mint -- a large mintage requiring a great many die pairs. Despite the number of coins struck, surprisingly few Gem Uncirculated examples survive. This silver-white example is one of those few, displaying a sheer overlay of warm-gray patina over the brightly lustrous silver surfaces. The right-hand stars show slight rounding at their centers yet the strike is nonetheless sharp in all other areas. This coin's distinctive eye appeal is sure to encourage many bids. Population: 23 in 65 (1 in 65+), 14 finer (2/24).
