Morgan Dollars
1879-CC $1 Capped Die, VAM-3, MS64 NGC. A Top 100 Variety. The 1879-CC Morgan dollar is the first truly scarce issue of the popular series, from a modest mintage of 756,000 pieces. The so-called Large CC Over Small CC reverse, or "Capped Die" variety, is identified by the die chips around the mintmark, which are thought, in part, to have been caused by "attempts to obliterate the smaller underlying mint mark from the die with engraving tools," according to VAMWorld.com.
This impressive Choice example offers well-preserved brilliant surfaces with vibrant, swirling mint luster. The design elements are well detailed, with just a touch of the usual softness on the hair above Liberty's ear. VAM-3 is seldom seen better than this.
