Gold Dollars
1875 G$1 MS63 PCGS. CAC. The tiny 400-piece circulation strike mintage makes the 1875 one of the rarest and most-desired of all gold dollars. Struck from new, polished dies, all examples are prooflike to the point that many were called proofs in early auction appearances. Today, two main characteristics distinguish circulation strikes from the equally rare proofs. A tiny thornlike tine extends downward from Liberty's chin on circulation strikes. Also, John Dannreuther reports (and photographically proves) that circulation strikes have the date slightly right of the proof date position. This coin is a beautiful Select Uncirculated example in contrasted prooflike condition. The diagnostic tine exists at the underside of Liberty's chin and the date is indeed slightly right of the proof date position. Housed in a light-blue label PCGS holder, this well-struck and high-end MS63 coin displays CAC endorsement. Population: 6 in 63, 18 finer. CAC: 1 in 63, 5 finer (2/24).
