Classic Quarter Eagles
1839-C $2 1/2 HM-1, High R.3, AU58 NGC. The second-year Charlotte quarter eagle is the final Classic issue from the North Carolina facility. The mintage was just 18,140 pieces, yet three die marriages are confirmed. HM-1 is distinctive for broad repunching on the 3 in the date, and multiple bold, lengthy die cracks on both sides. The widely repunched 3 would seem to merit a separate Guide Book listing for HM-1, since HM-2 and HM-3 show minimal recutting, though even the Mega Red 9th edition lists only one variety. This olive-green and orange-gold example exhibits exemplary surfaces and a good strike. The eye appeal is exceptional.
