1840-C $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. CAC. Variety 1. The first Charlotte Mint Liberty quarter eagle issue has a meager mintage of 12,822 pieces. Approximately 300 pieces survive today, many with impairments. The present near-Mint representative is tied with four other examples for finest at CAC. The yellow-gold surfaces display substantial luster, and the strike is above average for the remote branch facility. No marks are of any consequence. Census: 32 in 58, 17 finer. CAC: 5 in 58, 0 finer (1/24).
