Early Half Eagles
1804 $5 Small 8, BD-2, High R.4, MS60 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/c, early. The obverse die is cracked from the lower border through the 0 in the date and the bust, but has not progressed through the right corner of the L to the upper border. The reverse shows the light die crack that appeared earlier when that die was used with 1803-dated obverse dies. This reverse die was used with both obverse dies of 1803, and with four obverse dies dated 1804. These dies were paired on multiple occasions. John Dannreuther writes: "The emission order is obviously very difficult to pin down." Scattered marks on the straw-gold surfaces are expected at the lowest level of Mint State grades. This piece exhibits full luster and strong eye appeal.
