Liberty Half Eagles
1851-D $5 Strong D MS62 NGC. Variety 31-W. The 1851-D Liberty half eagles that feature a strong or bold D mintmark are undoubtedly more popular with collectors than the version that has a weak or barely visible mintmark. Of the former, there are three die marriages that were struck from combination of two obverse dies and two reverse dies. The obverse die with the repunched first 1 in the date as seen here was also used for the Weak D coins. The NGC and PCGS certification data shows that this example, featuring fully lustrous sunset-gold surfaces and trivial marks, is one of the 10 finest examples that survives from a mintage of 62,710 coins. Census: 4 in 62, 2 finer (2/24).
