Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1854-O $3 XF45 NGC. Variety 2. Variety 2 (Late state of Variety 1): Lapping on the reverse shows on the mintmark and the ribbons above the bowknot. The 1854-O three dollar gold, first-year issue of the odd denomination from the New Orleans Mint, is accordingly popular with collectors of type gold as well as Southern branch mint specialists. This Choice XF example shows good eye appeal amid the moderate high-point wear, with deep orange-reddish color and no singular marks, save for a couple of small diagonal scrapes on the reverse. The strike is sharp overall, despite the late state of the reverse die.
Ex: Dallas ANA Signature (Heritage, 10/2012), lot 5772.
