Liberty Double Eagles
1856-S $20 Full Serif, Bold S, S.S. Central America #2 (with Pinch) AU55 PCGS. Variety 17B. Prior to the S.S. Central America shipwreck recoveries, high grade Type One double eagles were extremely rare in regardless of the date or mint. While the number of Territorial Gold coins and ingots salvaged from the "Ship of Gold" are spectacular, the sheer number of Uncirculated or nearly Uncirculated 1856-S and 1857-S double eagles brought to the surface is staggering. This AU55 1856-S twenty dollar gold may not be the highest grade found, yet it is beautiful in its own right with vibrant orange-gold surfaces, a sharp strike, and outstanding eye appeal. The coin is housed in an oversized, dual-window PCGS holder with a pinch of gold dust and certified authentic by Bob Evans, Chief Scientist of the second S.S.C.A. recovery operations.
