Charles I, Robert Devereux, 3rd Earl of Essex, Military Reward, undated (c. 1642), silver badge, c. 1642, obv., armoured bust of Essex almost facing but slightly to the left, wearing plain collar and scarf; incised, EARL OF ESSEX above, rev., Essex shield; with integral suspension rings, 31.5 x 22mm, 5.6g (cf. M.I. I/298/117; Platt vol. II, p. 84, G7, this piece illustrated), extremely fine and toned, apparently the only known example with this obverse inscription Platt & Platt comment: '[This] example can be distinguished from the other medals in both richness of detail as well as having an inscription suggesting that perhaps this medal was made apart from then others. It was possibly made for a senior officer or official.' Provenance: Morton and Eden, 9 June 2009, lot 333; Paul Christensen collection.
