Charles I, Lord Fairfax, Military Reward, undated (1643), cast silver badge, obv., bust of Lord Ferdinando Fairfax of Cameron facing, wearing armour and sash, rev., arms of Fairfax within garnished shield, 43.2 x 26.9mm, 23.90g (M.I. I/304/126; Platt vol. II, p.123, type A), in very high relief, with integral suspension, lightly chased, good very fine and extremely rare Offered with copy correspondence between Paul Christensen and Philip Attwood suggesting that the British Museum's example of this medal (acquired from the Edward Hawkins collection in 1860, weighing 14.8g) is, like the Ashmolean Museum specimen, an electrotype copy. A recent XRF test has confirmed that the present medal contains 91% silver.Provenance: Paul Christensen collection; purchased from Mark Rasmussen.
