Charles I, Sir Richard Brown, Military Reward, 1644, cast silver badge, obv., armoured bust of Brown, NON VIR SED VIRTVS above, rev., armorial shield of Brown, FOR KING AND PARLIAMENT 1644 around, 37 x 26.5 mm. (M.I. I/312/142; Platt vol. II, p. 59, type A; Eimer 144), lightly chased, good very fine Sir Richard Brown (c. 1610-1669) successfully commanded a small Parliamentary army in the Abingdon area. Becoming disillusioned with the Parliamentary cause he joined the Royalists and was created a baronet after the Restoration; he was also elected Lord Mayor of London. Provenance: Greta S.
