The Commonwealth, General Lambert, 1653, a uniface cast silver badge, unsigned, bare head left dividing incuse letters I L, with ropework border on both sides, 36 x 26mm (M.I. I, 405/38; Platt vol. II, p.182. type B), good very fine John Lambert (1619-84) was a leading Parliamentary general during the Civil War who fought at Marston Moor in July 1644 and became Commander of Parliament troops in the north of England. In March 1649 he took the final surrender of Pontefract Castle, the last remaining Royalist stronghold in the country, which was then demolished.
