Charles I, Shrewsbury mint, pound, 1642, with initial mark of four pellets mostly obscured on the obverse by a flaw caused by damage to the die, obv., horseman trampling arms which do not include a cannon, thin plume behind, legend reads BRITAN, rev., Declaration between two straight lines, value XX and three plumes above, 119.77g (Morr. D-4; Brooker, but cf. Brooker 803 (half-pound) for obverse die and Brooker 796 (pound) for reverse; N. 2362; S. 2918), with typical die flaws on obverse, extremely fine and well struck, very rare Provenance: Probably H. Montagu (II), Sotheby, 13 November 1896, lot 537 and Spink's Numismatic Circular, January 1897 (35957); Dr E.C. Carter (collection purchased by A.H. Baldwin & Sons, 1950). Offered with an old Spink ticket with the reference 'Montagu 537'.
