Charles I, Exeter mint, halfcrown, dated 1642, m.m. rose on both sides, obv., King on spirited horse galloping left over arms and holding a baton in his right hand, rev., oval garnished shield, date 1642 in cartouche below, 14.91g (RCL 1; Liddell and Rayner, BNJ 30 (1961), COIN no. 7; Besly L22; Brooker 1013-1013A; N. 2534; S. 3071), minor metal flaws most noticeable at reverse centre and reverse legend double-struck, generally good very fine, with strong 'galloping horse' equestrian portrait Provenance: E.W. Rashleigh, Sotheby, 21 June 1909, lot 935; Dr E.C. Carter (collection purchased by A.H. Baldwin & Sons, 1950). Although these coins are dated 1642 and were at one time believed to have been struck at Truro, Besly (BNJ xxx 1992) has demonstrated that they were in fact struct at Exeter, probably in 1644. The late Michael Sharp suggested that the date 1642 might refer to the raising of the king's standard at Nottingham in 1642 at the beginning of the Civil War. These coins were also once believed to be machine-made, as argued by Liddell & Rayner (hence the inclusion of this specimen in the Sanders Collection), but this suggestion was refuted by Besly (p.119).

Estimate: 12000 - 15000 GBP
