In 2015 Joseph Hone, a postgraduate student at Oxford University, discovered that the design for this richly allegorical medal was derived by sketches made by Isaac Newton, then Master of the Mint. Newton's own notes state that the double headed monster being struck down by Anne as Minerva represents the twin threats of Louis XIV of France and the Old Pretender, James Francis Edward Stuart.
