Appealing and detailed specimen with some luster on large flan.

Aulus Hirtius served Caesar as legate in Gaul from c. 54, as envoy to Pompey around 50 and during the Civil War 48-45. He was mintmaster in Rome from 46. After the death of Ceasar in 44, he became Consul in 43, but died fighting the same year, when his army defeated Marc Antony. He is also famous for editing Caesar's Commentaries on the Gallic and Civil Wars.
Provenance: In a Massachusetts (USA) collection since 1906 or earlier.
