'Q' series. AR Victoriatus, uncertain Apulian mint, 210 BC. Obv. Laureate head of Jupiter right. Rev. Victory standing right, crowning trophy; between, flipped σ; in exergue, ROMA. Cr. 102/1; RRSC V 26. AR. 3.23 g. 16.00 mm. R. Rare. Choice example with bold portrait. Well centred and sound metal. Minor striking flatness. EF/Good VF. The letter on the reverse, usually read as Q, is interpreted as σ, following the recent study of Debernardi and the forthcoming publication Roman Republican Silver Coins (RRSC). The letter σ could stand for Salapia, which can be regarded as the harbor of Canusium. Salapia was reconquered in spring 210 by Marcellus, as his first action as consul for that year, after having been a Carthaginian stronghold, where also Hannibal lived for some time.
