PAMPHYLIA. Perge. Circa 260-230 BC. Chalkous (Bronze, 12 mm, 2.21 g, 12 h). Sphinx seated right, wearing kalathos. Rev. ИANAΨAΣ / ΠPEIIAΣ Artemis standing facing, head turned to left, holding wreath in her right hand and scepter with her left. BMC 15. Colin series 2.1. SNG France 355-368. SNG von Aulock 4649. Obverse slightly off-centre, otherwise, about very fine.



Perge was renowned for the worship of Artemis, whose temple stood on a hill outside the town, and in whose honour annual festivals were celebrated. The goddess also features regularly on the city's coinage.
