Nero Æ Drachm of Alexandria, Egypt. Dated RY 14 = AD 67/8. ΝΕΡΩ ΚΛΑV ΚΑΙΣ Σ[ΕΒ ΓΕΡ AV], laureate head to right; L IΔ (date) below chin / [ΖΕΥΣ ΚΑ]ΠΕΤΩΛΙΟΣ, Zeus enthroned to left, holding long sceptre and thunderbolt; at feet to left, eagle standing to left, head to right. RPC I 5285 corr. (attributed to RY 11); Dattari (Savio) 281; R. Pinnock, 'Nero's Large Bronze Coinage for Egypt' in NC 155, 1995, pp. 268-9, Type II; Emmett 140; NAC 114, 624; CNG Triton XXII = Triton XXI, 20; Künker 83, 782. 29.48g, 36mm, 12h.

Near Very Fine; tooled. Very Rare; seemingly only three other examples on CoinArchives.

This reverse type is somewhat unusual for an Egyptian coin given that it appears to be a depiction of Zeus derived from the temple cult statue of Jupiter on the Capitoline hill in Rome, as indicated by the legend ΖΕΥΣ ΚΑΠΕΤΩΛΙΟΣ. It has been noted by numismatists that the type recalls the Jupiter custos aurei and denarii of Rome believed to have been issued to celebrate Nero's preservation from the Pisonian conspiracy of AD 65 (see Pinnock pp. 270-1 and RPC I, p. 705).
