Cf. RIC IX 26 (Antioch; for similar type); cf. Depeyrot 36/1 (Antioch; same); Kastner 4, 300 (Antioch; same). Marks, area of repair on reverse. Fine. Rare.

Ex Heritage 3098 (18 January 2022), lot 333244.

The repair to the mint mark on this issue makes determining the mint impossible. While the most similar issue known is the Kastner piece which clearly belongs to Antioch, this mint mark on this piece may read C[...]M which could correlate to COM for Milan. This mint mark was used after the time of Valens on 1 1/2 Scripula for Gratian, Valentinian II, and Theodosius I (cf. RIC IX p. 77, 6), albeit with a different reverse type. While this coin's exergue does not appear to read AN (for Antioch) as was found on the Kastner piece, it is not possible to reattribute the coin with the repair present. Until another example appears, this coin's mint attribution is uncertain.
