Mysia, Pergamon. Circa 450 BC. AR Diobol (11mm, 1.59 g.). Laureate head of Apollo right. Rev. Bearded head right, wearing Persian tiara, within incuse square. Von Fritze, Pergamon pl. I, 1; Mørkholm, Pergamene 1; SNG BN 1546–8; Winzer 7.1 (Eurysthenes, satrap of Pergamon). From the first coinage of Pergamon. The satrap on the reverse is a subject of a dispute. Winzer assigned this issue to Eurysthenes but is more likely the person on the reverse to be Gongylos of Eretria (or Gongylid ruler) who flee to Asia Minor after the war with Persians and was rewarded from Xerxes with the territory of Pergamon (he ruled the city until 400 BC.) From the first coinage of Pergamon, Good Very Fine with a nice old cabinet tone. Very Rare.
