Early Quarters
1804 25C B-2, R.5 -- Graffiti -- PCGS Genuine. Fine Details. Ex: Jon D. Lusk Collection. The Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle series of quarter dollars struck from 1804 through 1807 includes 19 die varieties. Among those are one that is rated R.6 and six (including this variety) that are rated R.5. All others are more plentiful. Moderate old scratches are located below the equator on the obverse of this important piece that approaches VF details. In fact, this coin was graded VF30 with graffiti in its 2000 auction appearance and VF30 with "Some faint, old graffiti on the obverse" in its 2001 auction appearances. The surfaces on both sides are otherwise natural and pleasing with blue, gold, and iridescent toning. The Rea-Koenings-Haroutunian Census in Early Quarter Dollars of the United States Mint lists this example as the sixth finest in their roster.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2000), lot 6282; Pre-Long Beach Sale (Superior, 2/2001), lot 5429. From The Jon D. Lusk Collection.
