Sweden - Medals & Tokens - 1634 - Large silver medal at the weight of 5 Talers 'Funeral Gustav II Adolf in the Riddarholmen Church in Stockholm on June 22nd 1634' by S. Dadler (Maué 35, Hildebrand 188, Wieçek89, Dav. 275A) - Obv: King lying in state in foreground, battle scene (Lützen) in background, name of Jehovah in rays above over band of clouds with 13 angels, 3-line legend in exergue / Rev: King wearing cloak with sword and open bible, body half in armor, half as a skeleton, sitting in chariot drawn by three winged horses, trampling the Hydrs (multi-headed serpent), Faith and Courage holding wreath over his head - silver 79.21 mm 141.90 g. - cleaned, XF, very attractive piece
After his death on the battlefield of Lützen on November 6 1632, Gustav II Adolf's body was first taken to Weissenfels and in the spring of 1633 to Wolgast on the island of Usedom. In July 1633, the Swedish Admiral Gyllenhjelm transferred the body to Sweden and landed in Nyköping on August 8 1633. The body remained here until the grave monument in Stockholm's Riddarholmskyrka was completed. The solemn funeral took place on June 22, 1634
