ROMAN EMPIRE. Silver votive figurine of Mars. Ca. AD 50-150. This superbly modeled figure presents a bearded Mars wearing the panoply of a Roman general, including crested helmet, muscle cuirass, officer's cloak (paludamentum), kilt of pteruges, and greaves; he stands holding a hasta pura (headless spear) in his right hand and resting his right on a dished oval shield at his side, on a rectangular base. Figure is 2.25" - 55 cm tall, containing 30.56 grams of silver. Rendered with great delicacy by a supremely gifted craftsman, this figure represents the very peak of Roman artistry during the Empire's "Golden Age."From The Lexington Collection of Jonathan K.
