ROMAN EMPIRE. Bronze legionary votive figurine of a running boar. Ca. AD 50-150. Just over 2.25" (65mm) in length and weighing 83 grams, this masterpiece of miniature sculpture shows a fierce wild boar, back hairs bristling, at full charge. Beautifully modeled and anatomically accurate, it very likely is from the personal shrine of a Roman military officer, employed as a sacred symbol of his legion. Several legions employed the wild boar as a symbol, notably Legion X Fretensis, stationed in Judaea. A running boar identical to this figurine is often depicted on inscriptions and stamped roof tiles left by this famous legion. In superb condition, with a lovely two-tone green patina.
