ROMAN EMPIRE. Silver bowl with embossed face. Ca. AD 250-320. Oval bowl is 8" X 6.5" (20.3 X 15.5 cm) and bears within the tondo a raised bearded male face, likely representing Jupiter, in rough East Roman provincial style. Bowls of similar design were produced and widely disseminated during the reign of Licinius (AD 309-324), but with a raised medallion with the imperial image in the tondo; this piece may have been inspired by these bowls and could have been produced by partisans of pagan religion during the period AD 310-320, when Christianity was asserting itself as a favored religion. Weight: 205 grams. Silver appears to be somewhat base and shows areas of light corrosion and greenish patination, otherwise intact and unrestored.
Estimate: 3000-4000 USD
