ROMAN EMPIRE. Man's signet finger ring with engraved carnelian gemstone. Ca. AD 150-250. A massive ring of solid gold, 1.4" (34mm) outside diameter and weighing 65.60 grams, of plain hoop design with slightly projecting shoulders, inset with a red gemstone (carnelian) engraved with a figure of Minerva standing to right, in somewhat crude style, seen in profile, holding a spear and shield. Similar to fig. 450 in "Catalog of Greek, Etruscan and Roman Finger Rings" by F. A. Marshall (Harcourt-Smith, 1907), attributed to the mid-second through third century AD.
