BYZANTINE EMPIRE. Large gold pendant. Ca. 5th-7th centuries AD. Large (2" / 50mm including suspension loop) and and of thick cross-section, this circular pendant is delicately displays the refined craftsmanship and artistry of a master jeweler. The domed central boss, decorated with floral petals and set with a banded agate, surrounded by elaborate concentric bands with woven rope and dotted designs, topped by a similarly decorated suspension loop. Perfectly exemplifies the magnificence of the Late Roman - early Byzantine eras. Weight: 26.51 grams. Intact and unrepaired.From The Lexington Collection of Jonathan K. Kern.
