BYZANTINE EMPIRE. Silver reliquary cross. Ca. AD 900-1100. A lovely reliquary cross of in silver, decidedly scarce thus. One side depicts a Christ crucified, arms spread wide; the back depicts the Virgin orans. Originally designed to hold a piece of the "True Cross," this pleasing pendant is 2.1" (53 mm) tall including barrel suspension loop. In near pristine condition, with minimal surface wear, deep gray "find patina" intact.From The Lexington Collection of Jonathan K. Kern.
