Martinique & Tortola Countermarked 2 Bits G6 NGC, Prid-23. A Martinique "Moco" (a 1/4 cut segment of a Spanish Colonial 8 Reales with crenated edges, ca. 1797) cut from a Charles III 8 Reales 1795 Mo-FM countermarked on the obverse with the Tortola type III stamp ("Tirtila" within a shaped indent) and an unidentified counterstamp on the reverse. Base coin A. Good, countermark Fine, 6.06 grams. The aforementioned unidentified counterstamp, which the cataloger of the Roehrs collection described as "VIIV within a shaped indent" (which corresponds to the more visible part of it, although the shaped indent of the stamp is longer) has yet to be identified, but was applied before the obviously genuine Tortola one. An extremely rare and well-pedigreed West Indies countermarked triple issue, worthy of further research. Ex. Pridmore and Roehrs Collections
