Republic aluminum-bronze Essai 100 Francs 1914-A MS65 NGC, Paris mint, Maz-2113. Essai stamped below cock on obverse. An delightful Gem example of this important date, reportedly struck but unknown in its intended gold format, and only extant today in the form of off-metal essais. The surfaces of the present piece are immensely appealing with light reddish tone along the outer reverse dentils and warm orange-gold highlights around the central motifs. The surface quality remains at an elite level, with essentially no post-strike handling. Only minor porosity in the planchet (as made) prevents an even finer grade. Extremely rare, we have only been able to trace the sale of two other examples, an example that we sold in 2003 and more recently, a SP62 PCGS-graded example that was sold by Künker for a hammer price of 1700 Euros (approximately $2,300) in June of 2011.

Estimate: 3000-4000 USD
