Kings of Wessex. Ælfred the Great (871-899) Penny c.871-75 AU53 NGC, London obverse dies in style of Burgred, Wine as moneyer, S-1057A (insert incorrectly attributes coin to S-1057), North-625 (R). REX ELFRED, diademed bust right / + WINE across central field; MON ETΛ in unbroken lunettes above and below. A superb specimen with little evident handling and residual luster only somewhat muted by scattered porosity. The rims are fully upset and the flan lacks any visible flaws. Very rare thus.
