Great Britain
Kings of All England. Harold II (1066) Penny 1066 AU50 NGC, Winchester mint, Spræclinc as moneyer, S-1186, North-836. + HΛROLD REX ΛN, crowned head left, a scepter in front / + SPRAECLINC ON :, PAX between two lines. An interesting example of this brief issue. The moneyer's name is long enough that he left the mint name off of the die. Mercifully, there is only one Spræclinc known as a moneyer in the Harold II series, making the attribution to Winchester fairly certain. The coin itself is superb. The strike is firm and even, with near-perfect centering on a problem-free planchet. The tone is lovely and accentuates residual luster in protected areas. Rare in any condition, more so in this handsome state of preservation.
